AI search optimization for local businesses is the work of making sure your company is the one named when a homeowner asks an assistant, not a search box, who to call: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and the voice assistants built on them. Apuzzo Internet Marketing has done search marketing since 2000 and treats AI visibility as a layer on top of local SEO (search engine optimization), never a substitute for it. One client per market, measured in booked jobs.

The answer moved. Your customer followed it.
A homeowner in Naples with a water heater leaking into the garage used to type “plumber near me” and scan a list. Now many of them type a full sentence into ChatGPT, or ask Gemini from the car: who is a good plumber in Naples that can come today? The reply is two or three company names with a line of reasoning each. That is why we treat this as a discipline rather than a tactic: it covers every surface where software, not a person, builds the shortlist.
What AI search optimization for local businesses actually covers
| Layer | Where the answer appears | What the work is |
|---|---|---|
| Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets, voice replies | Structuring your expertise so Google can lift a direct answer from your pages and credit you |
| Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot writing a recommendation instead of showing a list | Building the entity signals and outside evidence a generative engine needs before it names you |
| LLM visibility (the assistant layer) | Every assistant built on a large language model | Keeping the facts about your business consistent and citable everywhere these models read, then checking what each one says and correcting it |
Why “ranked #1 on Maps but omitted by ChatGPT” happens
A company sits first in the Google Maps three-pack for its trade and town, and ChatGPT names three competitors without mentioning it. Usually nothing is broken. Maps ranks on proximity, relevance and prominence, computed by Google from your GBP (Google Business Profile) and its own review data. An assistant assembles its recommendation from what it has read across the web: your site, directories, review platforms, local press. If the web holds little consistent, citable information about you beyond your listing, the model builds its sentence about someone else.
Google has said there is no separate AI index. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that already rank, via fan-out queries. So the foundation you build for local SEO is the foundation the AI reads; the gap is the breadth and clarity of the evidence, not a missing trick. More in why ranking first on Google Maps does not mean ChatGPT recommends you.
The stack: why AI visibility sits on top of local SEO and your Google Business Profile
- Local SEO foundation. A crawlable site, a page per trade and per town, schema, consistent citations, real reviews. See local SEO services.
- Google Business Profile. The record Google trusts most about a local company, and the one AI Overviews lean on for “near me” questions. See Google Business Profile optimization.
- Answer engineering (AEO). Pages rewritten so a direct answer sits where Google can lift it.
- Entity and evidence (GEO). Outside sources that confirm who you are, what you do and where.
- Monitoring and correction. Assistants change answers as their sources change; we re-ask on a schedule and fix what is wrong.
Your knowledge graph is the asset
Every platform keeps a connected set of facts about your business: name, address, phone, trades, towns served, founding year, what customers say. That is your knowledge graph. Complete and consistent everywhere, AI citations follow. Thin or contradictory, you are the company the assistant is not sure about. It is the one investment no core update or new model release makes obsolete.
What is included in Apuzzo AI search optimization
| Area of work | What we do | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| AI visibility audit | Ask each assistant the trade-and-town questions your customers ask; record who gets named and why | You see the gap by platform before any money is spent |
| Knowledge graph build-out | Align every fact about your company across your site, GBP, directories, associations and review platforms | Consistent facts are what assistants cite |
| Monthly re-ask and correction | Repeat the audit questions, log changes, fix stale facts at the source | Answers drift; someone has to watch them |
| Reporting | Mentions by platform, calls by source, booked jobs, cost per lead, net profit | The numbers you run the business on |
How we use AI, and where a person stays in the loop
Frank Apuzzo has completed advanced AI-for-business training, including coursework from AI leader Allie K. Miller and an AI Workshop for Business Owners led by a former Microsoft Global GTM Director. We use AI tools daily. We do not let a model publish about your company unchecked: every page and every fact goes through a human-reviewed, AI-assisted workflow, because content that is obviously AI generated gets discounted by readers and, increasingly, by the models themselves. Weighing a chatbot against an agency? Read should I fire my SEO agency and use ChatGPT first.
An assistant names two or three companies. We work for one.
One company per trade, per market, since 2000. If we build AI visibility for your HVAC company in Fort Myers, no other HVAC company in Fort Myers can hire us. When the answer has three slots, it matters that your agency is not filling the other two.
What we measure
- Mentionsby assistant, by question
- Callsby source
- Booked jobsand cost per lead
- Net profitper new customer
Search Console shows AI Mode queries but still has no separate AI tracking report, and ChatGPT and Perplexity pass little referral data. So we pair what Search Console does show with direct re-asking of the assistants and call tracking on your lines, and report only what we can verify.

Who this is for
Established home-service companies with real revenue, several trucks and more than one service area: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, drain, roofing, restoration, pool and remodeling contractors. Most of our clients are across Southwest Florida, including Naples, Fort Myers and Miami; our home base is Marco Island.

The free visibility audit asks AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your customers ask, and shows you who gets named. If your market is open, it is yours.
AI search optimization questions owners ask
Is AI search optimization a separate service from local SEO?
It is a layer on top. Local SEO and your Google Business Profile produce the evidence; AEO structures it for Google’s answers; GEO and the assistant layer make sure ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot can find and trust it. Buying the top layer without the foundation does not work.
We rank first in the Maps pack. Do we still need this?
Ranking first on Maps means Google’s local algorithm trusts you. It does not mean ChatGPT or Perplexity has enough outside evidence to name you, and many well-ranked companies are absent from those answers today. The audit will tell you before you spend anything.
How long before AI search optimization produces calls?
Where the foundation is solid, changes in AI Overviews often show within weeks, because they draw on pages that already rank. Being named by ChatGPT or Perplexity for a competitive question usually takes longer, since it depends on outside sources updating. We set the timeline from the audit.
