Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of getting your company named inside an AI-written answer: when a homeowner asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot who to call, or when Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode write a recommendation instead of showing a list. Apuzzo Internet Marketing provides generative engine optimization services for home-service companies in Southwest Florida, one company per market, measured in booked jobs rather than mentions.

The recommendation is written, not looked up
A homeowner in Cape Coral with a tripping breaker no longer scans ten results and a map. She types “who is a reliable electrician in Cape Coral for an older panel” into ChatGPT and gets three names, a sentence on each, and a reason to call the first. Nobody ranked those companies. The assistant read what it could find, decided which it could vouch for, and wrote the answer.
A search result is a position. An AI citation is a judgment: the model found enough consistent, checkable information about you to put your name in its own sentence. Companies that lead the Google Maps pack are regularly missing from that sentence, because the map rewards proximity while the assistant rewards evidence. See why ranking first on Google Maps does not mean ChatGPT recommends you.
GEO, AEO and local SEO: where the line actually is
Local search engine optimization (SEO) earns you a place on Google’s list and in the Maps pack. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) makes one page of yours the direct answer to one question, mostly inside Google’s own products. GEO is wider. A generative engine does not pick one page; it reads many sources at once, checks whether they agree, and synthesizes. So GEO is less about a single quotable page and more about whether everything a model can read about your company tells the same story.
| Platform | Where its facts come from | What it tends to cite |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini | Google’s index. There is no separate AI index; fan-out queries assemble the answer from pages that already rank, plus the knowledge graph and Google Business Profile data | Service and city pages, your profile, review themes |
| ChatGPT | Training data plus live web search for current, local questions, drawing largely on Bing’s index | Your site, directories, review platforms, forums that mention you |
| Perplexity | Live retrieval for every answer, with numbered citations | Pages that state a fact plainly and are backed by a second source |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing’s index and Bing Places | Bing Places listing, your site, directories Bing trusts |
How generative engines decide whom to name
- Can it find you? The search it runs behind the scenes has to retrieve a page or listing connecting your company to the trade and town in the question.
- Can it verify you? It looks for the same facts in more than one place: your site, your Google Business Profile (GBP), Bing Places, the Chamber of Commerce, trade directories, review platforms. Agreement builds your entity in the knowledge graph. Disagreement gets you quietly dropped.
- Can it describe you? The answer needs a sentence: what you do, where, for whom, since when. If your site never says so plainly, the model names the competitor who did.
Large language models (LLMs), the technology behind ChatGPT and similar assistants, do not memorize your company. They reconstruct it each time from the evidence available, and GEO makes that evidence complete, consistent and quotable, starting from the same local SEO foundation everything else stands on. For the Google side, read how AI Overviews choose which local businesses to recommend. For the assistant side, read how to get your business cited by ChatGPT.

How the work runs
Visibility audit
Where you appear today across Search, Maps and every AI assistant for the questions that book work. You learn the gap, what it costs, and whether your market is open.
Foundation
Local SEO, Google Business Profile, technical fixes and citations. If your last agency built these well, we keep them. Usually the first 60 to 90 days.
Entity and evidence
Knowledge graph work, Bing and directory coverage, describable pages and the review process. The GEO layer builds on the foundation.
Measure profit, not mentions
Calls by source including AI answers, booked jobs, cost per lead and net profit, reported plainly every month.
An assistant names two or three companies. We work for one.
One company per trade, per market, at a time. If we build the evidence for your roofing company in Fort Myers, no other roofer in Fort Myers can hire us. Trying to be two of the three names in one answer would be dishonest.
Who does the work
Frank Apuzzo founded this company in February 2000 and still runs every engagement himself. His search career began in 1997 at Orlando’s first web design and SEO firm, where he co-founded the Internet marketing division. He is a Certified SEO Expert with formal AI-for-business training, including coursework from AI leader Allie K. Miller and an AI workshop for business owners led by a former Microsoft global go-to-market director. Generative engines are new; the evidence they read is not, and 26 years of building it is the point.

Generative engine optimization questions owners ask
Can I ignore GEO and just do regular SEO?
For a while it will look fine, because Google’s AI answers are built from pages that already rank. The risk is outside Google: ChatGPT and Copilot read Bing and the wider web, and a strong Google footprint alone can leave you absent there. More in can you ignore GEO and just do regular SEO.
How do you know whether ChatGPT or Perplexity is recommending us?
We ask them, on a schedule, with the questions your customers use for each trade and town, and log who gets named and which sources are cited. That log is paired with call tracking, so a mention that produced no call is not counted as a win.
How long before GEO produces calls?
Assistants that search live, such as Perplexity, can reflect changes to your listings and pages within weeks. Answers that lean on training data follow the footprint you build over months. If the local foundation needs work, that comes first. We set expectations from the audit, not a script.
