Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the listing that decides whether your company appears in the map pack when a homeowner searches “plumber near me” or “AC repair Naples.” A Google Business Profile optimization service from Apuzzo Internet Marketing treats that listing as what it is: the highest-value piece of real estate your business owns online. We have managed it for one company per market since 2000, and we measure the work in calls and booked jobs.

Why the map pack decides who gets the call
When someone in Naples searches for an emergency plumber, Google shows a map with three businesses before it shows a single website. Most local calls start there. A homeowner with water on the floor does not scroll past it, and they rarely click “more places.” The three companies in that pack get the phone calls. Everyone else gets the leftovers.
The map pack is built from your Google Business Profile, not your website. That is why a company with a mediocre site and a well-managed profile can outrank a company with a beautiful site and a neglected one. It is also why so many home-service owners tell us they are “stuck at number four” for the searches that matter. Number four is the most expensive place to be.
What Google actually weighs
Google ranks local profiles on three broad factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is mostly your primary category, secondary categories, services and the words in your profile. Distance is where the searcher is standing relative to your listed location or service area. Prominence is your review count, review velocity, how you respond, your citations and the authority of your website. Our Google Business Profile ranking factors guide walks through each one in plain English.
You cannot move your building. You can control almost everything else. Here is where most profiles we audit are losing calls.
| Profile element | Common problem | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Primary category | “Contractor” instead of “Plumber,” or the wrong one of the two trades you run | You are invisible for the search that books the most work |
| Secondary categories | Missing “Drainage service,” “Water heater repair,” “HVAC contractor” and the like | Each missing category is a set of searches you are not in |
| Services list | Blank, or a single line copied from the website | Google cannot match you to “tankless water heater install” |
| Service areas | Set to one town, or to the whole state | Too narrow loses towns; too wide dilutes relevance everywhere |
| Reviews | Stuck around the same count for a year while a competitor is past 160 | Google reads a stalled profile as a business that stopped mattering |
| Review responses | None, or one-word replies | Homeowners read the responses; so does Google |
| Photos and posts | Two photos from 2019, no posts since the pandemic | Engagement signals decay, and the profile looks closed |
| Name, address, phone | Different across Yelp, the BBB, Angi and the Chamber | Mismatched citations quietly suppress map rankings |
What a Google Business Profile optimization service includes
GBP work is not a one-time setup. Google changes the product often, competitors keep adding reviews, and a profile that nobody touches slides. Here is what an Apuzzo engagement covers, month after month.
- Category and relevance audit. Primary category, secondary categories and services matched to the searches that book work in your trade, checked against the three profiles currently in the pack for each of your towns.
- Ranking grid. A geo-grid rank map for each core search: dozens of points across your service area, each showing where you rank from that spot. It is the honest picture of your visibility, and the artifact we report against every month.
- Review system. A repeatable way for your technicians to ask for a review after every completed job, so review velocity stays steady rather than arriving in bursts. Genuine reviews from actual customers only. We also write the responses.
- Profile content. Description, services with descriptions, attributes, hours, holiday hours, booking and messaging settings, and a photo cadence that matches the work you actually do.
- Citation cleanup. Name, address and phone matched across the directories that count, and duplicate listings removed.
- Website tie-in. Your profile links to a page built for the same search, with local business schema, so the profile and the site reinforce each other. This is where GBP meets our local SEO work.
- Spam and suppression watch. Fake competitor listings, keyword-stuffed business names and suspended profiles reported and handled before they cost you a season.
Why reviews matter more than most owners think
Review count, review velocity and your responses feed prominence, which is one of the three things Google weighs. They also decide whether the homeowner calls the first name in the pack or the third. Rankings get you seen; reviews get you chosen. We wrote up the details in how much Google reviews matter for local rankings.
GBP is now the source for AI answers, too
Google has said there is no separate AI index. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from the same local signals that build the map pack: your profile, your categories, your reviews and your website. When a homeowner asks Google or Gemini “who is a good plumber in Naples,” the answer is assembled from the same profile you are reading about on this page.
ChatGPT and Perplexity work differently. They pull from your website, directories, review sites and the mentions of your business across the web, and they do not always agree with Maps. Being first in the map pack does not guarantee a mention in ChatGPT, which is why our GBP work connects to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and LLM and AI search optimization. LLM stands for large language model, the technology behind ChatGPT and similar assistants. The profile is the foundation. The rest of the Apuzzo Visibility System is built on it.
How we run it
Audit the profile and the pack
We pull a ranking grid for your core searches, compare your categories, reviews and content to the three profiles currently winning, and put a dollar figure on the gap.
Fix the foundation
Categories, services, service areas, citations, photos and the review process, usually inside the first 30 to 60 days. Map pack movement often shows within weeks.
Keep it moving
Posts, photos, review responses, Q&A and spam reports every month, plus the website pages that give Google and the AI engines something to cite.
Report profit, not positions
The grid, calls from the profile by source, booked jobs and cost per lead, every month, in a report you can read in five minutes.
- Gridshare of green points
- Callsfrom the profile, by search
- Booked jobsattributed to Maps
- Cost per leadversus your ads
One company per trade, per market
There are only three spots in the map pack. An agency that manages profiles for two plumbers in the same city is competing against itself with your money. We take one company per trade, per market, and have since February 2000. If we work for your HVAC company in Naples, no other HVAC company in Naples can hire us. If your market is open, it is yours.
Frank Apuzzo has been in search marketing since 1997 and runs every engagement himself. He is a Certified SEO Expert, and he will tell you what the grid says before he tells you what he can do about it. The work is done here in Southwest Florida, for companies in Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and the surrounding markets, plus Sarasota, Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Google Business Profile questions owners ask
Why is my Google Business Profile not ranking when it used to?
Usually one of four things: a competitor has passed you on reviews, your category or service area was changed, a citation or duplicate listing is confusing Google, or a Google update shifted the weighting. A ranking grid shows where you dropped and by how much. We wrote a diagnostic order in why is my Google Business Profile not ranking.
How long does GBP optimization take to show results?
Category, service and citation fixes often show on the grid within a few weeks. Review-driven gains build over months, because reviews have to be earned one job at a time. We set the timeline from the audit, based on how far behind the current pack you are.
Can you get reviews for us?
We build the system that gets them from your actual customers, after real jobs. We do not buy, trade or write reviews, and you should walk away from anyone who offers to. Google removes bought reviews and can suspend the profile that received them.
We are a service-area business with no storefront. Does this still apply?
Yes, and it matters more. Service-area businesses hide their address and rank by the service areas they list, so choosing those areas well and building relevance for each town is most of the work. Most plumbing, HVAC and electrical companies we work with are set up this way.
Is GBP optimization the same as local SEO?
It is the core of it. GBP drives the map pack; local SEO adds the website pages, technical work and links that drive organic results and feed the AI answers. We run them together, because Google treats them as one set of signals.
