Should you replace your SEO agency with ChatGPT? No. ChatGPT can write a useful first draft; it cannot audit your market, manage your Google Business Profile, or build the structured content that gets you cited in AI Overviews. An agency that cannot explain the difference between those two things is the real problem.
What AI tools are actually good at in local SEO
ChatGPT and similar LLM (large language model) tools are useful for tasks that involve generating text from a well-defined prompt: drafting service page outlines, writing FAQ answers for review, brainstorming headline variations. With a qualified reviewer, they can speed up content production meaningfully.
What they cannot do is make decisions. They do not know your market, your competitor’s GBP (Google Business Profile) weaknesses, or which of your service pages is leaking traffic. They generate plausible-sounding text, and without a human reviewer, that text may be confidently wrong.
Where AI tools fall short on SEO-critical work
- Market auditsRequire live data, competitor analysis, and local knowledge
- GBP managementCategories, service areas, and photo strategy need human judgment
- Technical SEOCrawl errors, schema, and site speed need direct access to your site
- AI citabilityGetting cited in AI Overviews requires structured content a person has to architect
In a test of a real local service site, AI tools missed the majority of obvious technical errors that a qualified audit caught: duplicate title tags, broken internal links, and GBP category mismatches that were actively suppressing map pack rankings. ChatGPT can describe what an audit covers. It cannot run one on your actual site.
The real question: should you fire your current agency?
That depends on what you are getting. If the answer to any of these is no, the relationship may be the problem:
- Can your agency explain what they did last month on your site and in your GBP?
- Does the monthly report show calls by source and booked jobs, not just keyword positions?
- Is your agency also working for one of your competitors in the same city?
- Has anyone discussed your customer acquisition cost or net profit per job?
If your agency cannot answer those questions, replacing them with a better agency makes more sense than replacing them with a tool. A good agency uses AI as part of the workflow (for research and drafting) while supplying the judgment and accountability the tool cannot.
AI-assisted work, human-reviewed results
Frank Apuzzo has completed advanced AI-for-business training, including coursework from AI leader Allie K. Miller and an AI Workshop for Business Owners led by a former Microsoft Global GTM Director. Every AI-assisted output is reviewed and fact-checked before it touches your site or your GBP. That is the right workflow, and it is how we have operated since adding AI to the process.
The AI question that actually matters for your business
There is a more important question than “can ChatGPT replace my agency”: is your business appearing in Google AI Overviews, in ChatGPT recommendations, and in Perplexity answers when someone in your market searches for your trade? Being cited by those systems requires a specific kind of structured, authoritative content. That is the work of AI and LLM search optimization, and it is an extension of good local SEO, not a replacement for it.

Questions about AI and SEO agencies
Can ChatGPT write my local SEO content?
It can produce a first draft. That draft still needs review by someone who knows your trade, your market, and the technical requirements: correct schema markup, appropriate internal links, accurate service area references, and the structure that AI Overviews tend to cite. An unreviewed AI draft can work for a while and hurt you later when quality signals catch up.
Does my SEO agency know how to handle AI Overviews?
Ask them directly: what are you doing to make sure I appear in Google AI Overviews and in ChatGPT or Perplexity results for my trades and cities? If the answer is vague, they may be running a pre-2023 playbook. AI systems reward structured, specific, authoritative content — the same fundamentals classic local SEO has always valued, with additional emphasis on passage-level clarity.
