AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AI search optimization are the disciplines that make your business the answer when a customer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google a question, not just a link they scroll past. They extend classic SEO (search engine optimization) to cover where answers are now given, not just where links are listed.
- AEOBeing cited in AI-generated answers
- GEOGetting recommended by generative AI platforms
- Classic SEOThe foundation that makes both possible

The difference between SEO, AEO and GEO
Classic local SEO (search engine optimization) puts your business in Google’s organic results and the Maps three-pack when someone types a search. That is still the highest-volume channel for most home-service companies, and it still works. But the search results page has changed. Google now places an AI Overview above the organic links for many queries. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini answer questions directly without sending people to a list of links at all.
AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, is the practice of structuring your content so it earns inclusion in those AI-generated answers. The goal is that when someone asks “who is the best plumber in Naples, FL,” the AI cites or names your company, not a competitor.
GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, goes one layer deeper. It covers the signals that make a large language model (LLM, the technology behind ChatGPT and similar AI assistants) treat your business as a credible, well-known entity worth recommending. That includes consistent name and contact information across the web, structured data on your site, strong GBP (Google Business Profile) signals, and the kind of detailed, factual content AI systems can actually cite.
| Discipline | Where the answer appears | What moves the needle |
|---|---|---|
| Local SEO | Google organic results, Google Maps three-pack | Site structure, GBP completeness, citations, reviews, service and city pages |
| AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) | Google AI Overviews, voice assistants, featured snippets | Question-and-answer content structure, schema markup, authoritative FAQs |
| GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Bing Copilot | Entity consistency, cited sources, factual depth, structured content AI can pull from |
| LLM / AI search optimization | All AI-powered platforms | The full stack above, applied to language model training and retrieval signals |
Why local service companies need all three
A homeowner with a hot-water heater failure is not stopping to compare five tabs. They ask their phone, ask ChatGPT, or look at whatever Google puts first. If the first answer names your competitor, you do not get a chance to be evaluated. The decision can be made before any link is clicked.
The businesses showing up in AI answers right now are mostly the ones that did their classic SEO homework: a well-built site, a thorough GBP, consistent citations, real reviews, and service pages that explain what you do in each town. AI systems are trained on and retrieval-augmented from the same sources Google has always valued. The shortcut is that there is no shortcut. The foundation has to be right first.
The same foundation, more doors
AEO and GEO are not a replacement for local SEO. They are what happens when you build the local SEO foundation correctly and then structure your expertise for AI systems to cite. Skip the foundation and AI optimization produces nothing.
What each discipline actually involves
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
AEO starts with understanding what questions your customers ask before they book: “how much does HVAC replacement cost in Naples,” “what causes a sewer line to back up,” “should I repair or replace my roof.” Each of those is a real search and a real AI query. Writing a clear, accurate answer to each question, and marking it up with structured FAQ schema, gives Google and other AI platforms something clean to cite in their answer boxes.
Our Answer Engine Optimization service builds out this content layer for each trade and each city you serve, tied to the questions that actually lead to calls.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
GEO addresses the signals LLMs use when they decide which business to recommend in a conversational answer. Entity consistency matters most: your business name, address, phone number and service description should match exactly across your website, your GBP listing, your main directories and anywhere you are cited online. Discrepancies confuse the model and lower your confidence score.
Content depth matters too. A page that explains how a tankless water heater installation works in a Southwest Florida home, what it costs, and who the right candidate is, gives an AI model something useful to reference. A page that says “we install water heaters, call us today” gives it nothing.

How Apuzzo applies AEO and GEO
Visibility audit
We map where you appear today across Google Search, Maps, AI Overviews and the major AI assistants. You see the gap before we charge anything.
Foundation review
We verify the local SEO base is solid: GBP completeness, citation consistency, structured data, service and city page coverage. Everything AI optimization builds on.
Answer architecture
We identify the questions your customers ask and write clear, factual answers, structured so Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity can cite them. FAQ schema applied throughout.
Entity reinforcement
Name, address, phone and service scope consistent across every property that AI systems draw from. We fix the gaps and monitor for drift.
How AEO and GEO differ from what you have been paying for
Most reporting from SEO agencies shows keyword positions. A position is not an answer. Google’s AI Overview does not show positions: it cites sources or names businesses directly. ChatGPT does not show a list of links; it recommends, with a reason. If your agency’s report ends with “your keyword moved from position 7 to position 4,” they may not be tracking whether you are appearing in AI answers at all.
Frank Apuzzo has completed advanced AI-for-business training, including coursework from AI leader Allie K. Miller and an AI Workshop for Business Owners led by a former Microsoft Global GTM Director. He has built AEO and GEO into the Apuzzo Visibility System alongside the classic local SEO work he has done since 2000.

Common questions about AEO, GEO and AI search
Do I need AEO and GEO if my local SEO is already working?
Yes, eventually. Classic local SEO controls Google’s organic links and the Maps three-pack. AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity are a separate channel, and their share of the queries people make is growing. Strong local SEO is the foundation, but it does not automatically translate into AI citations without the additional content and entity work AEO and GEO involve.
How do I know if my business is showing up in AI answers?
Ask the questions your customers would ask. Type “best plumber in [your city]” or “who should I call for HVAC replacement in [your town]” into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. If your business does not appear in the first one or two responses, there is a gap. The free visibility audit maps this across all the major platforms.
What is an LLM and why does it matter for my business?
LLM stands for large language model, the technology behind ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Bing Copilot. These models generate conversational answers rather than returning a list of links. When a customer asks one of these tools for a recommendation, the model draws on its training data and live retrieval. Businesses with consistent, well-structured information online are more likely to be cited or recommended.
Is this different from just doing more content marketing?
Partly. Content matters, but the structure of the content matters as much as the volume. A page that answers a specific question clearly and marks it up with FAQ schema is more useful to an AI system than five pages of general blog posts. AEO and GEO are about precision: the right questions answered in the right format, tied to the right entities.
Can Apuzzo do AEO and GEO alongside my existing SEO?
Yes. The starting point is always a visibility audit to see what the current foundation looks like. From there, AEO and GEO work builds on what is already in place, filling the gaps that AI platforms care about. We do not require you to start over.
