How much does local SEO cost? For an established home-service company, a credible monthly retainer typically runs $1,500 to $5,000, depending on market size and scope. The better question is what you pay per booked job, and whether that number beats what you pay today.
Why price-per-month is the wrong way to shop for local SEO
A $500-a-month SEO package and a $3,000-a-month engagement have almost nothing in common except the word “SEO.” One is typically a template report and a handful of directory submissions. The other is active work on your Google Business Profile (GBP), service and city pages, technical signals, citations, and structured content that appears in Google’s AI Overviews and AI-powered platforms like ChatGPT and Perplexity.
When a roofing company books one extra job a week from better visibility, the cost per acquired job can be well under $200 a month at the right retainer. The math depends on your market, your job value, and what the work actually covers.
What drives local SEO cost
| Factor | Why it affects the price |
|---|---|
| Number of service cities | Each city needs its own page, GBP service-area work, and citation profile. |
| Number of trades or service lines | A plumber who also does water heaters, drain cleaning, and gas lines needs a page for each service. |
| Market competition | Naples has more established contractors than a small inland county. Outranking them requires more consistent effort. |
| Baseline condition | A site with no structured markup and a neglected GBP needs more initial work than a site in decent shape. |
| AI visibility scope | Adding answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), and LLM (large language model, the technology behind ChatGPT and similar assistants) optimization extends the monthly scope. |
Three questions to ask before signing anything
What does one new customer cost you today?
If you spend $4,000 a month on pay-per-click and book 20 jobs, your customer acquisition cost is $200. A good SEO program should beat that within six to twelve months on a per-job basis, and it compounds over time in a way paid ads do not.
What is one new customer worth in net profit?
An HVAC company that closes a full system installation at $8,000 with a 30% net margin clears $2,400 from a single job. Know your own number. The SEO price becomes straightforward to justify or reject once you do.
Who else does this agency work for in your market?
An agency that also serves your competitor has a conflict of interest regardless of how accounts are managed internally. Ask plainly: will you work for another company in my trade and market at the same time? A real exclusivity policy says no. Ours has for 26 years.
Is $10,000 a month worth it?
Sometimes, yes: for a multi-location home-service company covering six to eight cities across several trades, with a full scope across local SEO, GBP, AEO, and GEO. In that scenario, the engagement could generate far more in incremental net profit than it costs.
Usually no: for a single-city company with one trade and a clean site. An honest agency scopes the work at what it actually costs.
The number that matters is cost per booked job
Rankings are an input. Calls are a proxy. Booked jobs at a cost you can sustain — that is the scoreboard. Frank Apuzzo has been running client engagements against that scoreboard since February 2000. Learn more about our approach on the About page.
Two things are always poor investments: rank-#1 guarantees (no one controls Google’s algorithm) and monthly reports that show only keyword positions with no connection to booked jobs. For a detailed look at return on investment, see the local SEO ROI and cost-per-lead guide.

Questions owners ask about SEO cost
Can I do local SEO myself instead of paying an agency?
Some of it, yes. Keeping your GBP active, asking for reviews after every job, and maintaining consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across directories are manageable in-house. Technical audits, structured content for AI citability, and ongoing competitive monitoring typically require time and specialized knowledge most owners do not have available.
What should a monthly SEO report show me?
At minimum: where your calls are coming from by source, how many jobs those calls produce, what each booked job costs from organic search, and what changed on the site and in your GBP during the month. A report that shows only keyword positions without connecting them to revenue is measuring the wrong thing.
