A Google Business Profile (GBP) that is not ranking is usually missing one or more of: a well-matched primary category, service areas that align with your actual coverage radius, a website with pages specific to your trades and cities, and a recent flow of reviews. Distance from the searcher matters too, but it is not something you can change. The other signals are.
The first things to check when your GBP is not ranking
Google ranks GBP listings in the map pack on three factors: relevance (does your listing match what was searched?), distance (how close is the searcher?), and prominence (is there enough evidence of an active, established business?). A listing that underperforms is almost always weak on relevance or prominence. Distance is fixed; the other two are not.
Check your primary category
The primary category is the single biggest relevance signal. Pick the most specific category that matches your core work, not a broader umbrella. Secondary categories help for additional services, but the primary one carries the most weight.
Audit your service areas
Listing 20 cities spreads your relevance across all of them. Most home-service companies perform best with a focused radius of 8 to 12 cities they actually serve consistently. Overstating your area weakens your signal in every market on the list.
Look at your website
Google treats your website as evidence for your GBP claims. If your site has one generic plumbing page but your GBP lists Fort Myers, Naples and Cape Coral as service areas, there is nothing to corroborate those claims. A dedicated page per city and trade closes that gap.
Assess your review velocity
A steady flow of recent reviews, even a few per month, outperforms a large total with no recent additions. No new reviews in eight months signals to Google that the business may not be as active as it once was.
Other common reasons GBP rankings drop or stall
Several other factors suppress map pack placement for home-service companies in Southwest Florida.
| Issue | What to look for |
|---|---|
| NAP inconsistency | Name, address and phone differ across Google, Yelp, Bing and your site. Even a suite number mismatch can suppress rankings. |
| Missing GBP services | The Services section is empty or incomplete. Google uses it to match your listing to specific searches. |
| No recent posts or photos | An inactive profile signals a potentially inactive business. Regular posts and fresh photos reinforce that you are open and working. |
| Spam update volatility | Google runs periodic spam updates. If your ranking shifted sharply in a short window, a spam update may have affected your listing or your competitors. |
| Competitor strength | In markets like Naples or Fort Myers, a stagnant listing may simply be outranked by competitors with stronger signals. |
What fixing this looks like in practice
A full Google Business Profile optimization engagement starts with a ranking audit: which searches your listing appears for, at what rank, and what the gap is between your signals and the businesses outranking you. From there: category refinement, service area narrowing, website alignment through city-and-trade pages, citation cleanup, and a review process your team can sustain. You can read about the full picture in our guide to GBP ranking factors and in how much reviews affect rankings.
One client per market
Apuzzo Internet Marketing works with one company per trade per market. If your market is open, the ranking improvements you build are not shared with a competitor down the street. That policy has been in place since February 2000 and has never changed.

GBP ranking questions owners ask
How long does it take for GBP changes to affect rankings?
Category and service area edits can shift your ranking within days to a few weeks. Website changes take longer because Google needs to recrawl and re-evaluate the content. A realistic timeline for meaningful map pack movement is two to three months of consistent work.
My GBP ranking varies by city. Why?
Local rankings are hyper-localized. Google shows different results depending on where the searcher is physically located. A business based in Marco Island may rank well near its address and weaker in Fort Myers because Google factors the searcher’s actual distance, not just your stated service areas.
Can a competitor report my GBP and hurt my ranking?
Yes, it happens. Keeping your listing accurate, your NAP consistent, and your GBP policies clean is the best defense. If your listing was suspended, Google has a reinstatement appeal process.
